The Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 18,167.64, down 271.84 points or 1.47% from the previous close, while National Stock Exchange’s Nifty shut shop at 5,449.65, lower by 81.85 points or 1.48%. The Sensex, then, struck its day’s lows at 17,920.55, while Nifty hit a low level of 5,373.65.
Broader markets, too, were the victims in trade today. The BSE Midcap and BSE Smallcap gave away 1.43% and 1.63% respectively. Among the 13 sectoral indices, only BSE Oil & Gas index (0.32%) reversed its initial losses and ended as the only gainer. On the other hand, BSE Realty index (-3.14%) was the biggest laggard in trade today. Other losers included BSE Auto index (-2.03%), BSE Metal index (-2.02%) and BSE Power index (-2.01%).
Index heavyweight Reliance Industries (1.83%) and Reliance-ADAG company RCom (0.45%) were the only two stocks on the Sensex to have ended with gains.
Meanwhile, the long list of losers on the 30-scrip index included JP Associates (-3.8%), Maruti Suzuki (-3.55%), ONGC (-3.42%), Sterlite Industries (-3.25%), DLF (-3.15%) and Wipro (-3.15%). The overall market breadth ended on an extremely negative note. Out of the 2927 stocks traded on the BSE, 1979 declined, a mere 847 advanced and 101 remained unchanged.
